Monument to the War of Independence in Haapajärvi

Monument to the War of Independence in Haapajärvi

The red granite monument was unveiled in Haapajärvi on 21 June 1921 next to the church. The obelisk is topped with a granite ball. On the front side of the monument there is the coat of arms of Northern Ostrobothnia and the texts:

For faith,
Fatherland
and
most precious freedom

Not one step we have
not retreated in the battle
for the freedom of the Fatherland
and
the humanity

On the base of the obelisk are engraved the names of nine warriors who died in the Finnish War of Independence, as well as the name of Erkki Haapanen (09.03.1897 – 01.01.1922), a Primary School teacher, who fell in battle during the East Karelian Uprising in Koivuniemi Village (Tungudskaya Volost, White Sea Karelia).
